Wilbert Brent has been with the Art Center Program for over ten years. His is known for his colorful, extensively labored and tribal-esque paintings. His work is heavily influenced by aboriginal art and patterns that he reinterprets through a contemporary abstract aesthetic. In the studio, Brent is reserved and spends nearly all of his time laboring on his paintings. When he first joined the Art Centers Program, he preferred to work in a self directed manner but in recent years, he has opened up to working collaboratively with other artists and has created a body of rich and densely layered abstract mixed media works on a variety of surfaces including blocks of wood, repurposed frames, fabric, and other functional objects.
